When a patient searches “dentist near me,” Google shows a map and three practice listings above the regular results. This block is called the map pack (or local pack), and for most practices it’s the single biggest source of new patient calls.
Here’s how Google decides who gets those three spots, and what you can do about it.
The three ranking factors
Google has said publicly that local results are based on three things:
1. Relevance
How well your listing matches what the person searched. If someone searches “emergency dentist,” a profile with “Emergency Dental Service” listed as a category and service, plus a website page about emergency care, is more relevant than one that only says “Dentist.”
What to do: Choose the most accurate primary category, add relevant secondary categories, list every service you offer, and have a dedicated page on your website for each major treatment.
2. Distance
How far your office is from the person searching. You can’t change your address, which is why your rankings look different from one neighborhood to the next.
What to do: Track rankings across a grid of locations, not from your office chair. Strengthen relevance and prominence to extend how far your rankings reach.
3. Prominence
How well-known and trusted your practice is. Google looks at review count and rating, how recent the reviews are, links to your website, citations in directories, and general web presence.
What to do: Ask every patient for a review, keep your name, address, and phone identical everywhere online, and earn links from local organizations.
Common mistakes that hold dentists back
- Wrong primary category. A cosmetic-focused practice listed only as “Dentist” misses relevance for cosmetic searches.
- Mismatched info. An old suite number on Yelp and a different phone on Healthgrades creates doubt about which data is right.
- Review droughts. A big burst of reviews followed by nothing for months.
- A thin website. One “Services” page instead of a page for each treatment.
- Keyword stuffing the business name. “Smith Dental - Best Dentist Austin Implants” can get the profile suspended.
A 30-day checklist
- Audit your Google Business Profile categories and services.
- Add 10 or more real photos of your office, team, and exterior.
- Set up automated review requests after every appointment.
- Fix your top 20 citations so they match your profile exactly.
- Publish a dedicated page for your highest-value treatment.
- Start posting to your profile weekly.
These steps alone move many practices up several spots. Competitive markets need more: content, links, and steady review growth over months.
